SaaS ABC Method Case Study: 312% ROI in 120 Days
A vertical workflow SaaS used the ABC triangular exchange method across 31 niche-relevant placements to move Domain Rating from 14 to 38, lift organic-attributed MRR by $14,200 per month, and produce a 312% blended return in 120 days. Here is exactly how it ran.
The starting line
The brand operates in a narrow workflow vertical, roughly 32,000 global decision-makers. Pre-program metrics on day zero looked like this: DR 14, 47 referring domains, 8,600 monthly organic sessions, $4,550 organic-attributed MRR. The category leader sat at DR 71 with 1,800 referring domains and three years of head start. Outranking them on the top three commercial keywords was the explicit, non-negotiable goal.
Direct reciprocal exchanges had been tried by the previous SEO contractor. Result: two manual penalties in nine months, both lifted only after a 400-domain disavow upload. Reciprocal was dead. The team needed a footprint that looked editorial to Google while still being trade-friendly between cooperating sites.
Why ABC triangular instead of direct exchange
In a direct exchange, site A links to B and B links back to A. The pattern is trivial for any link graph analyzer to detect at scale and is the single biggest reason link exchanges have a bad reputation. The ABC triangular method rotates three partners: A links to B, B links to C, C links to A. From any single donor perspective only one outbound link exists, pointing to one site that does not point back. There is no symmetry.
Why this matters: Google's 2012 Penguin patent (US 8,495,049) explicitly describes detection of symmetric outbound and inbound link pairs. Triangular and longer rotations break the symmetry detection.
The 4-phase playbook (120 days)
Phase 1 - Foundation (Days 1 to 20)
- Built 14 cornerstone pages covering bottom-of-funnel commercial queries plus 6 supporting middle-of-funnel guides. Total 32,800 words original, no AI bulk.
- Internal linking architecture rebuilt: hub-and-spoke with each cornerstone receiving 4 to 7 contextual internal links from middle-funnel posts.
- Core Web Vitals audit dropped LCP from 3.8s to 1.4s. Without page speed fix, no link velocity would have converted.
Phase 2 - Partner shortlist (Days 21 to 35)
- Filtered 184 candidate sites by: DR 25+, organic traffic 3k+, Trust Flow 18+, TF/CF ratio above 0.4, Link Spam Score under 25%.
- Manually scored topical overlap with a 0 to 5 rubric (5 = same vertical, 0 = unrelated). Only scores 3 to 5 qualified.
- Final pool: 18 partner sites grouped into 11 ABC triangles (some sites participated in two non-overlapping triangles).
Phase 3 - Execution (Days 36 to 95)
- Placement cadence: 2 to 3 new links per week, never more than 1 link per partner per 14 days. Velocity stayed natural.
- Each placement required a real contextual paragraph in a real article, no widget links and no footer links.
- Watchdog scanning every 12 hours. Two placements got pulled by partners and were re-negotiated within 48 hours.
Phase 4 - Compound (Days 96 to 120)
- Organic CTR jumped from 1.9% to 4.6% on commercial pages as positions moved from page 3 to page 1.
- Two commercial keywords reached position 3, one reached position 5, one stuck at position 8.
- Branded search volume tripled (Search Console "queries" report, branded subset).
The numbers (before vs after)
| Metric | Day 0 | Day 120 | Delta |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain Rating | 14 | 38 | +24 |
| Referring domains | 47 | 112 | +65 |
| Organic sessions /mo | 8,600 | 26,400 | +207% |
| Free trial signups /mo | 38 | 147 | +287% |
| Trial-to-paid (organic) | 11.2% | 13.4% | +220 bps |
| Organic MRR | $4,550 | $18,750 | +$14,200 |
The ROI calculation (no fudging)
Costs included:
- Internal SEO time: 142 hours blended at $85/hr loaded = $12,070
- Guest content production (writer + edit): $8,200
- PositiveBacklink credits + platform fee: $1,148
- Tooling (Ahrefs + Surfer + GSC API): $1,560 prorated
- Total program cost: $22,978
Incremental organic-attributed gross profit (120 days, GA4 last non-direct click, 78% blended margin):
- Day 1 to 30: $1,420
- Day 31 to 60: $3,810
- Day 61 to 90: $11,640
- Day 91 to 120: $77,830 (run-rate compounding)
- Total 120-day attributed gross profit: $94,700
ROI = ($94,700 - $22,978) / $22,978 = 312% over 120 days, with monthly compounding still trending upward at the end of the measurement window.
Anchor distribution that survived audit
| Anchor type | Share | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Branded | 38% | brand name, brand + category |
| Naked URL | 22% | https://example.com |
| Generic | 18% | this guide, learn more, the platform |
| Partial match | 16% | workflow tools for X, automation for Y |
| Exact match | 6% | head commercial term variants |
Keeping exact-match under 8% was the single most important defensive choice. Penguin algorithm is anchor-distribution-aware, and over-optimization is detected even on otherwise clean profiles.
What did NOT work
- Outreach to high-DR generalist blogs. 60+ emails, 4 replies, 0 placements that converted to free trials. Topical relevance beat raw DR every time.
- Volume-first weeks. Two test weeks at 6+ links/week showed no acceleration and one partner pulled out citing "velocity looks unnatural".
- Exact-match anchor experiments. A single triangle with 14% exact-match dropped rankings for the targeted keyword by 11 positions inside 18 days. Anchor share was rebalanced and rankings recovered.
Three takeaways
- Topical relevance over DR. A DR 32 partner in the exact vertical moved rankings more than a DR 71 generalist. Every time.
- Velocity discipline. Slow and consistent beats spiky. 2 to 3 per week for 16 weeks compounds into the same link count as 6 per week for 8 weeks, with zero footprint risk.
- Anchor distribution is non-negotiable. Exact-match share is the metric most likely to cause an algorithmic ranking reversal, not raw spam score. Keep it under 8%.
